Truth Matters: Our God is a consuming fire

Various Passages

Jealousy is a sin. It is worse than anger, for it will not stop until it has gotten rid of the obstacle in its way. Jealousy caused Cain to kill Abel, and the Jewish leaders to crucify Christ. Where there is jealousy you will find disorder and every vile practice. If this is so why does the Bible say, “the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God”? Jealousy in God is not sin. He is not jealous of someone, but He is jealous for his own honour and glory. He is like a husband who is jealous for his wife’s sake. He is passionate to protect her from people who would harm and abuse her. A husband who is not jealous in this way is weak, and does not care for his wife. Likewise the Lord is jealous for his glory and for the good of his people. “Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, ‘He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us’?” A sermon by Ivor Jefferies.
