God’s holiness is his dazzling splendour and beauty. Thomas Watson called it the most sparkling jewel of his crown. God’s holiness is his moral perfection: “God is light, and in Him is no darkness.” Yet how does his holiness differ from that of the holy angels who are also sinless? If they are holy as God is holy, why do they veil their faces in his presence? They know that God’s holiness is not like theirs merely to a higher degree. His holiness is of a completely different order. He is unique and in a class of his own. John Piper says: “God is holy in His absolute uniqueness. Everything else belongs to a class. We are human; Rover is a dog; the oak is a tree; Earth is a planet; the Milky Way is one of a billion galaxies; Gabriel is an angel; Satan is a demon. But only God is God.
