A promise of grace

A Bible lesson by Ivor Jefferies

1. How did man degenerate after the Fall, and what was the final result?
Read Gen. 4:5, 19, 23, 6:1-7, 11-13, 17.

2. What did God promise to Noah and his family, and why?
Read Gen. 6:8-9, 18, 7:1-4, 11-16.

3. Why did Noah send out a dove after the flood, what did it symbolize, and how is this a picture of Christ?
Read Gen. 8:8-12, 1:2, Matt. 3:16, Luke 12:50, 2 Cor 5:17, 1 Pet. 3:20-21.

4. What covenant did God make with Noah and all creation, what sign did He give, and what does it symbolize?
Read Gen. 9:8-17, Ps. 7:12-13.

Whenever you see a rainbow, it should remind you of God’s covenant with Noah. It is a sign of God’s grace, not a symbol of gay pride and the celebration of sin. His grace has appeared to free us from sin; it is not a license to sin (cf. Tit. 2:11-12, Gal. 5:13, 1 Pet. 2:16, Jude 4).

5. Noah’s father hoped him to be the Saviour of Gen. 3:15, 5:29. In what ways was Noah like Adam, and how did he fail to establish a new creation?
Compare Gen. 9:1-7, 20-23 with 1:28-30, 2:15, 3:6-7.

6. How does the Lord Jesus Christ fulfil God’s covenant with Noah?
Read Isa. 11:1, 6-9, Eph. 1:10, Col. 1:20, Rom. 8:19-22, 2 Pet. 3:5-7, 10-13, Rev. 21:1-4, 4:2-3, Ezek. 1:26-28.

7. What should the promise of a new creation cause you to pray, and how do you know if you are part of it?
Read 1 Cor. 16:22b, 2 Tim. 4:8, Rev. 22:17, 20, 2 Cor. 5:17, Eph. 2:8-10.
