A Bible lesson by Ivor Jefferies
1. What evidence for the resurrection do the following verses provide?
Read Luke 24:2-3, 34-35, 6-7, 18:31, 33, Ps. 16:10-11, Acts 2:25-32, 1:3, 1 Cor. 15:3-8, Acts 9:1-22.
Kirsopp Lake, a critical New Testament scholar from the previous century, proposed “the wrong tomb” theory. In it he said that the women accidentally lost their way and went to a vacant tomb. Upon seeing the caretaker they mistook him for an angel. He suspected that they were looking for a loved one, and told them Jesus is not there. He then pointed to the right tomb saying, “See where they laid Him.” The frightened women misunderstood his words and ran away. So the story of the empty tomb began, and was spread among the followers of Jesus.1
2. How do the four Gospels disprove the theory of the wrong tomb?
Read Mark 15:46-47, 16:1, Matt. 28:8-9, 1-4, 11-15, Luke 24:4-5, 6-8.
3. Liberals say that Jesus’ body was stolen or eaten by dogs, or that the disciples hallucinated and invented the resurrection. Why are they wrong?
Read Matt. 27:62-66, 28:13, Luke 18:33-34, 24:9-11, 36-43, John 20:24-28, Acts 4:1-20, 5:40-42, 7:54-60.
4. What would happen if the bodily resurrection of Jesus is a myth?
Read Rom. 4:25, 1 Cor. 15:14-15, 17-19.
5. Who raised Jesus from the dead?
Read John 10:18, Rom. 1:4, 8:11, Gal. 1:4.
6. What kind of body did Jesus have after his resurrection from the dead?
Read Luke 24:31, 36-43, John 20:19, 26-27, Acts 1:9 (cf. 8:39, 12:6-10), Rom. 6:9, Heb. 7:16, Rev. 1:12-16.
7. Christ’s resurrection body is the pattern for our glorified body (Phil. 3:21). What will this body be like?
Read Matt. 13:43, Acts 10:41, 1 Cor. 15:35-44, 1 Thess. 4:16-17, Rev. 2:7.
8. How do we experience the power of Christ’s resurrection here and now, and have you tasted it?
Read Rom. 6:3-5, 9-11, Eph. 1:19-20, 2:5, 1 Pet. 1:3, 3:21, John 11:25-26.
