According to John 12:28-29, 13:31-32, 17:1 the Father and the Son glorify each other at the cross. At no time in history did God reveal more of his glory than at Calvary. Here the beauty of his attributes is displayed in the plain sight of men, angels and demons.
1. How does Calvary reveal God’s wisdom and knowledge?
Read Isa. 53:11, Rom. 11:33, 1 Cor. 1:18, 23-25, 2:7, 1 Pet. 1:12.
2. How did God show his faithfulness at the cross, and how does this comfort you?
Read 2 Cor. 1:19-20, Luke 18:31-33, 24:46-47, Acts 13:38-39.
3. How did God reveal his love at Calvary, and what emotion should this stir up in your heart?
Read John 10:17, 14:31, 3:16, Rom. 5:8, 1 John 3:16, 4:9-10, 19.
4. How did God reveal his mercy and grace at the cross?
Read Isa. 52:14, 53:4-6, Zech. 3:2, Rom. 6:23, Eph. 1:3-14.
5. Where do we see God’s holy justice and patience at Calvary?
Read Isa. 53:7, Exo. 34:7, Rom. 3:25.
Many unbelievers complain about hell. But if God were to take bribes and let sin slide, He would be corrupt. It is precisely because He is good and just, that He does not leave sin unpunished. In the end all sin will be punished: either on the cross, or in hell.
6. How does Calvary show God’s zeal or jealousy for his glory, and how should we imitate Him?
Read Ps. 69:9, Isa. 42:21, 59:16-17, Jas. 4:5, John 2:17, Rom. 12:11.
7. How was God’s eternal wrath over sin revealed at Calvary?
Read Matt. 27:46, 2 Cor. 5:21, Gal. 3:13, John 18:11 (cf. Rev. 14:10-11, Ps. 75:8 for “the cup”).
Christ, being infinite, suffered in time what we, who are finite, would have to suffer for eternity.
8. How is God’s power revealed in the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ?
Read Col. 2:15, Heb. 2:14-15, 1 John 3:8, Rev. 1:17-18, 7:9-10.
9. Even at the cross God remained perfectly happy. In what sense did it please Him to crush his Son?
Read Isa. 53:10-11,1 Ezek. 18:23, Matt. 12:18, Eph. 5:2, Phil. 2:8-11.
10. What does God’s unchanging nature at the cross mean to you?
Read Heb. 7:20-25, 13:20-21.
